Panchakarma

As the name suggests, Panchakarma stands for five karma(procedure). These are undertaken for purification of the body (body servicing). Ayurveda is the only system of medicine which proposes the need of undertaking the purification of biological systems from gross channels up to cell level aiming to clean the entire organism to render it suitable for self recover & therapeutic responsiveness.

The process of Panchakarma is carried out in three stages:

I.   Preparatory measures, (poorva karma)

1.    Pachan (digestion)
2.    Snehan (internal & external oleation)
3.    Swedan (herbal fomentation)

II.   Principal measures (pradhan karma): These are main karma of Panchakarma therapy

1.    Vaman (induced vomiting) for kapha
2.    Virechan (induced purgation) for pitta
3.    Basti (medicated enema) for vata
4.    Nasya (nasal insufflations) for ENT disorders
5.    Raktamokshan (therapeutic bloodletting) for blood disorders

III.   Post therapeutic measure (Paschat karma)

This includes special dietary regimen- Samsarjan karma.

Synchronised Massage (Abhyanga) :

This is subjecting the body with comfortable strokes along with the application of medicated oils. This therapy comforts the person, improves blood circulation, and prevents absorption of inflammatory exudation, removes obesity & pain in body, relieves fatigue & promotes development of muscles. Massage is indicated daily to prevent ageing and degeneration process. Synchronized massage is also beneficial in preventing wrinkles and scales.

Pizhichil (Dharashek) :

It is sudation therapy done by pouring warm medicated oil over the body from particular height with a regular speed of flow. This is effective in paralysis, hemiplegia, arthritis, stiffness of limbs, spastic conditions.   It is also rejuvenation therapy.   A beautiful combination of two classical Ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation).

Njavarakizhi (Pindasweda) :

By this procedure, the whole body or a particular part thereof is made to sweat by the gentle massage with medicinal puddings as boluses tied in cloth. Indicated for neurological diseases, rheumatisms, arthritis, emaciation of limbs & restoration of health.

Elakizhi (Pathrapotali Sweda) :

This is a herbal treatment for stiffness, body pain, etc. especially in the arthritis & paralysis. Boluses of fried herbal leaves will be warmed by dipping in medicated warm oil & massaging with it all over the body will warm.
Use: This therapy is effective for various kinds of arthritis, Spondylosis, back pain, sports injuries and for all other soft tissue inflammations especially join pains.

Thakradhara :

It is sudation therapy done by pouring warm medicated buttermilk in the forehead. Indicated for insomnia, depression & burning sensation in the head.

Tharpana :

Medicated ghee is pored on the eyes with black gram paste. This therapy will cool irritated and stressed eyes. It relieves eyestrain & improves eyesight.

Head & Face Massage :

Using Ayurvedic techniques and special medicated oil, this concentrated massage on head and face relieves stress and strain related problems, improves memory and is known to have a curative effect for insomnia, depression, anxiety, etc. It bestows better vision, better hearing, clears nasal problems and improves the texture and complexion of face.

Udwarthanam :

It is a typical deep and dry massage using herbal powders. This massage reduces obesity & imparts mobility to joints. It also strengthens muscles & refreshes the body.

Choorna Swedam (Podikkizhi) :

In this procedure, the whole body is made to sweat by massaging with herbal powder as boluses tied in cloth. Indicated for neurological diseases, rheumatism & arthritis.

Sirodhara :

It is the process by which medicated oil, milk etc. are poured in continuous stream in the fore head. Indicated for neurological diseases, insomnia, depression, chronic headaches, sleeplessness & burning sensation in the head.  

Herbal Steam Bath :

It is the procedure by which the person is made to perspire by the application of medicated steam all over the body, except the head.  Indicated for neurological ailments, rheumatism, pain in all over the body, stiffness back, arthritis, skin diseases etc.

Sirovasthy :

This is a treatment for brain strength. In this treatment, a cap made up of flexible leather will be fixed on the head & slightly warm oil will be poured inside. This is done for one hour.
